How to master your time to master your business

AUGUST 28, 2017

Can we just get straight on one thing before you read on? Can we agree that the comment “I don’t have time” is just code for “I am choosing not to make it a priority.” In fact if I can go one step further and say, I don’t have the time is the modern day equivalent to classic excuse “the dog ate my homework!” …. are you still there??

Ok, so yes I have teenagers, so you’ll understand my stance on this subject. But its about being brutally honest with yourself. Consciously competent about how you expend your time, and what you are willing, and what you are not willing to do.

I work with many many people who tell me often “I don’t have time” or “my time management is bad.” So lets switch that thinking and think of time as your asset. An asset that you have to nurture, to take care of and to appreciate.

You’ve heard the phrase we all have the same 24 hours in the day and of course its a fairly common held view, that if you need something done, just give it to someone who is busy and they will get it done. I’m a fairly organised person but when I worked full time, had a full time job and was studying part time for my MBA I got so much more done!

Indulge me, don’t think of a list of things you need to get done, switch your thinking, reframe how you think of time and reposition your time as opportunities:

  • Planning time
  • Thinking time
  • Time for excuses
  • Time to just do it!
  • Business improvement time
  • Continuous improvement time
  • Down time
  • Time to reflect
  • Personal development time
  • Time for you
  • Time for celebration

Can you see how reframing how you think of it is so liberating?

Tomas Edison once wrote, “Thinking in the hardest work there is, which is why most people would rather die than think.” Hey think about it – what do you prefer to do?

I bet you know people who take action and you envy them. You’ll also know people who take time to think and they take precise, measured action – and yes, you envy them. Then there are those who overthink everything and they are paralysed with fear and procrastinate even the smallest element and you pity them!

So stop thinking about them and get to work on your time management. Reframe your thinking, get your head around it and see your time as opportunities to enjoy and take action.

When you master your time you will master your business. Now stop reading my blog and start taking action. 🙂

To your success
