5 ways to avoid notification fatigue
OCTOBER 30, 2017
Social media is one of the most powerful ways to reach your business target audience, draw in new customers and share your business to the masses. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Google+ and Snapchat can all soon take up your entire day if you’re not careful. Regularly sharing across these platforms can result in a never ending notification frenzy which needs managing to ensure it doesn’t affect your day.
Do you sit there in the evening with your phone or device (or both) pinging and buzzing away – your partner/ husband / wife or child looks daggers at you as they think you’re “playing” on Facebook and have NO IDEA you are running your business and it just doesn’t stop because they want some one-on-one time! So lets explore some simple top tips how not to freak yourself out with notification fatigue without losing your mind or your business.
So let’s talk about how can that be done?
- Set yourself times in which you can check social media. If you have your phone next to your laptop don’t keep looking at the screen as notifications pop up and you find yourself continually scrolling through endless crap. Work in 45 minute sections throughout the day, and every 45 minutes, take a short 5 minute break. In this time, grab a refreshment, check your emails or social media and then start your next 45 minute slot. You’ve got to be strict. In the world of social media, nothing can happen in those 45 minutes that will be detrimental to your business. If that feels like too long and you’re at risk of social media cold turkey try 20 minutes and build yourself up – I know you can do it.
- Turn your notifications off so you only see them when you go into the app or open up the platform on your desktop. This enables you to really focus on your work then when it’s time to look at social media, you can do so uninterrupted.
- Set your mobile to silent, leaving just telephone calls welcome. Combine point 1 and 3 and you’ll really make progress.Which platforms work for you? If you’re an image-rich business, Pinterest and Instagram are for you. But, if not, Facebook and Twitter may be your chosen platforms. Spend some time establishing what works for you and your business and focus on those. Don’t feel you have to be on all of them just because they’re there.
- As hard as it may be, do not check your social media notifications first thing in the morning. This adds instant chaos to your day as you’ll find yourself chasing your tail for the remainder of it. Get up, get ready, make a coffee then in your own time, start to check your accounts. You have to have control over social media because it really is addictive and you can soon realise you’ve spent a whole day on Facebook. Take control, take action and take success.
- You really have to be very savvy with social media in this day and age. It’s all too easy to waste hours on one platform, endlessly scrolling or responding to notifications immediately. Yes, while you do need to be reactive on there, nothing will happen in a couple of hours that can disastrous to your business. Be strict with yourself and you’ll soon reap the rewards.
