Kickstart your career this New Year

As we welcome in another new year, there’s never been a better time to kickstart your career and shape the year you want. With Blue Monday just around the corner and the ever increasing failure of New Years Resolutions there’s even more of a reason to ensure yours are deemed a success 12 months from now. The best way to do so? Turn them into actionable and accountable goals with these 7 simple steps.

  1. Definition. What is it you want to achieve with your business this year? Now is as good a time as any to really define what it is you’re after – in a monetary term, as well as in a business success point of view. Do you want global clients? More stockists? To develop more products? Get it written down – that’s the first, and most vital step.
  2. Plan. Week by week, month by month, quarter by quarter. Business planning should be a scheduled weekly task, with the bigger goals being monitored on a monthly or quarterly basis. Set time aside to review that plan at the end of each time frame to ensure you’re right on track. If you’re not, you need to assess why and correct for the next review.
  3. Promote yourself. As big headed as it may sound, it is vital for your business success. If you can’t tell the world how great your products or services are then how do you expect anyone else to.
  4. Outsource. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – do what you do best, and outsource the rest!
  5. Schedule time to work ON your business, not just IN your business. This time is vital for business growth and development, any new campaigns and strategies you may be planning as well as allowing you to take a step back and analyse your business from an outsiders perspective. Something that will never get done if your head is always buried in paperwork, emails and files.
  6. Rest. You can’t keep running on an empty tank. The power of time off is often overlooked as you may you’re not
  7. Routine. Do you check social media when you think of it and find yourself answering emails all day when you could be spending that time dealing with customers, product creation or your marketing strategy? Get into a routine (and keep adjusting that routine until you have something that works for you) and stick to it! So that may give you an hour for emails and social media first thing, an hour off at lunchtime to actually eat away from your desk and enjoy a walk and an hour of emails and social media at the end of the day. Your productivity will be noticeable by the end of the first week – guaranteed!
