How to Write a Compelling Elevator Pitch

AUGUST 14, 2018

An Elevator Pitch. Have 30 seconds ever sounded so daunting?!
Well, it really doesn’t need to be this way and if you know what you’re doing you should find coming up with the perfect pitch as easy as ever.
For those of you that don’t know, an elevator pitch is a short overview of your business, products and/or services. It is one of the simplest, yet most powerful tools a small business owner has. The length does tend to vary, but typically we should be aiming for around 30 seconds (that’s around 150- 250 words, depending on how quickly you plan to speak!).
An effective elevator pitch can help you introduce yourself and break the ice in networking settings. You can also use your pitch to clarify your target audience and business goals for your own use, this should help you to become more confident and self-assured in all business situations! If you’re working as part of a team, having an elevator pitch that you are all familiar with can help to keep you on the same page, and reaching for the same goals.
So, my advice to writing a strong elevator pitch that works for you is to start a couple of sentences with the following words:

  1. For: who are you targeting? What is there age/gender? Where do they live? How much money on average do they earn?
  2. The: what are you? What is your name?
  3. Is a: What are you offering? What problem does your product/ service solve?
  4. Unlike: Who are your competitors? What makes you different/ better?

Everyone’s business is different, so what works for you won’t be the same as what works for me. Play around with the above, and just try to see it as a starting point. The main idea behind an elevator pitch is that it aligns your business, your values, and what you’re about. There is no right or wrong, no one knows your business better than you do!
